A Story of the Moments

The place on the shore where I sit to daydream centers on one of many large rocks.  It’s not likely to catch the eye of a passing boater.  But with its sheltering white pines, the granite ledge I climb down to get there, and the particular view of islands and bay it affords, it has become a place that holds the story of the moments I have spent there.  My eye is drawn to it from the water as I kayak in the bay.  I see it in my mind’s eye as I approach it through the woods.  It is a destination, a place, which I perceive and experience as distinct from the backdrop of the surrounding landscape. – excerpt from “On Place and Space,” by Kate Miller
